Destination not working on Shopify — causes and fixes

If Google Merchant Center shows Destination not working (or a desktop or mobile page that is not working) on some of your products, Google tried to open the product's landing page and could not use it. Items with this issue can be disapproved, so they stop showing in Shopping ads, Performance Max, and free listings until the page works again.

On Shopify, the cause is usually one of a small number of things you can check yourself.

What Google is checking

Google sends its crawlers to the URL in the product's link attribute. [Link [link]](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324416?hl=en) is the attribute, and About landing page requirements is the policy those pages have to meet. If the request returns an error such as a 404 or a 5xx, gets stuck in redirects, or lands on a page that cannot be accessed, Google treats the destination as not working. The crawl failures are summarized in Product crawl issues. A page Google cannot access is also covered by How to fix: Product page unavailable.

Tips to help your products stay approved says Google uses Googlebot and Googlebot Image, and Google StoreBot as well for some checks. Allow those crawlers. Do not assume a page that loads in your own browser is the page the crawler receives.

Google also re-crawls pages over time, so a URL that worked when you uploaded the feed can fail later, for example after you delete a product. Product crawl issues says products stay disapproved until the landing page can be crawled. This site does not submit a review request to Google.

The common Shopify causes

1. The product was deleted or its handle changed

When you delete a product in Shopify, its URL (`/products/your-handle`) returns a 404. If the product is still in your feed, because the feed app has not synced yet or a variant id lingers, Google crawls a dead page.

Changing a product's handle has the same effect when no redirect exists. Shopify's current help for redirects is Creating and managing URL redirects. Redirects work from URLs that already return a 404. In the admin they are under Content → Menus → View URL Redirects.

Check: open the exact URL from Merchant Center in a private browser window. If you see your theme's 404 page, this is the cause.

Fix: restore the product, add a redirect to the closest replacement, or stop the feed from sending the item. Then request a review in Merchant Center where that option is offered, or wait for the next crawl.

2. The product is draft, archived, or not on the Online Store channel

A product that is not available on the online store is not a working landing page. Shopify's status meanings are in Product status and availability. If the item is still in your feed, Google requests a page shoppers cannot open.

Fix: publish it to the Online Store, or remove it from the feed.

3. Your storefront password is on

New stores and stores in maintenance often keep Shopify's private mode on. Every product URL then shows the password page instead of the product. Google cannot see the product, so every item can be affected at once. The control is Online Store → Preferences, described in Restrict access to your online store.

Check: open a product URL while logged out of Shopify admin. If you get the password page, Google can get it too.

Fix: turn private mode off when you are ready for the storefront to be public.

4. Redirect chains and geolocation redirects

Apps or theme scripts that redirect visitors by country, or a chain of redirects (old URL, then another URL, then another), can send a crawler somewhere other than the product page. About landing page requirements expects the linked page to be the product, including for crawlers.

Fix: keep a product redirect to a single hop, and make sure country or market redirects do not block or loop for bots. If you use Shopify Markets, check that the URL in your feed matches the market domain or subfolder you are advertising.

5. Bot protection or temporary server errors

A bot-blocking app or a proxy in front of the store can return an error to crawlers while a normal browser loads the page. A short outage can do the same. Tips to help your products stay approved is the page that names the crawlers to allow.

Fix: check security or bot-protection settings and allow Google's crawlers. If the error was temporary, Google's next crawl is what clears it. Exact timing is set by Google.

How to check it yourself (no app needed)

  1. In Merchant Center, open the products that need attention and filter by the issue. The label in your account can differ by account version.
  2. Copy a few affected product URLs exactly as Google has them, including any query such as `?variant=`.
  3. Open each in a private window. Note a 404, a password page, a redirect to the homepage or another product, or an error page.
  4. In Shopify admin, find the product by handle. Check whether it is deleted, draft, archived, or missing from the Online Store channel.
  5. Fix the cause, then use Merchant Center's review option where it is offered, or wait for the next crawl.

Repeat this when you delete, rename, or unpublish products, especially before a sale, when the catalog changes quickly.

Preventing it next time

  • Before deleting a product that is advertised, decide where its URL should go and add the redirect first. Shopify only applies a redirect from a URL that already 404s.
  • When you change a handle, add a redirect for the old URL if that URL should keep working.
  • Turn off the storefront password before you connect a feed.
  • After a bulk edit or import, open a few product URLs from the feed.

Where PageCop fits (PageCop is our app)

Checking by hand works for a small catalog. If you have a large catalog and run Google Shopping or Performance Max, PageCop fetches your Shopify product pages on a schedule and files Destination not working when it sees a 404, a bad redirect, or a password page, with the evidence and a fix to try. It is read-only and does not sign in to Google. A clear PageCop scan does not mean Google has approved the item.

The same issue is written up as a short guide: Destination not working.
